The effect of medium-chain triglyceride on 47 calcium absorption in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis.

چکیده
Calcium absorption, as measured by whole-body retention of isotopic (47)calcium, was investigated in 10 controls and 10 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis before and after medium-chain triglyceride therapy. Absorption of calcium was impaired in eight patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, three of whom had normal serum bilirubin. Mean absorption was significantly less in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis than in controls. Impaired calcium absorption correlated well with increased faecal fat excretion and less well with the intensity of jaundice. Osteoporosis was diagnosed radiologically in seven patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, and calcium absorption was restored to normal in seven out of eight patients after medium-chain triglyceride therapy. Decrease of steatorrhoea, weight gain, and relief of bone pain have been noted in most patients with primary biliary cirrhosis after therapy. It is concluded that bone disease occurs early in primary biliary cirrhosis, and early medium-chain triglyceride therapy in these patients is suggested.

Effect of oral 1,25 dihydroxycholecalciferol on calcium and phosphate malabsorption in primary biliary cirrhosis.
Changes in calcium and phosphate absorption in response to treatment with small doses of oral 1,25 (OH)2D3 were studied in 10 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis by means of a combined radio-isotope technique. There was a marked improvement in the fractional rates of absorption of calcium (P less than 0.01) and phosphate (0.05 P less than 0.1) after treatment. This implies than there is no ...

Introdution: Primary biliary cirrhosis is a chronic cholestatic disease of the liver, characterized by the inflammation plus progressive and non-purulent destruction of the small biliary ducts, and the presence of auto antibodies against mitochondrial self-antigens. It seems that the prevalence of PBC in the western world is more than other parts of the world. This study aimed to identify all t...
متن کاملCalcium absorption in the normal, bile-duct ligated, and cirrhotic rat, with observations on the effect of long- and medium-chain triglycerides.
There are numerous reports of bone thinning in association with disease of the liver and biliary system. In cirrhosis of the liver, both osteomalacia and osteoporosis have been reported. Osteomalacia has been attributed to either malabsorption or lack of storage of vitamin D, and osteoporosis variously to hypoalbuminaemia, endocrine disorders, or malabsorption of calcium (Cocchi, 1951; Lichtwit...
متن کاملTreatment of osteomalacia associated with primary biliary cirrhosis with parenteral vitamin D2 or oral 25-hydroxyvitamin D3.
The histological and biochemical response of osteomalacia has been studied in four patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, who were treated with oral 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, 50 microgram daily, or intramuscular vitamin D2, 150,000 units once weekly, for five to 12 months. All patients showed complete histological healing of osteomalacia, despite rapidly deteriorating liver function in three. Pla...
متن کاملThe effect of fat on calcium absorption from a mixed meal in normal subjects, patients with malabsorptive disease, and patients with a partial gastrectomy.
The absorption of (47)Ca Cl(2) taken with a milk and porridge meal was measured in normal subjects, patients with a partial gastrectomy, and patients with malabsorption. The addition of palm oil to the meal depressed calcium absorption, whereas the addition of medium-chain triglyceride had no effect. The contrasting effect of the two fats on calcium absorption was most marked in patients with a...
